As a single mother of five, pursuing a nursing career was challenging, but I was determined. I relied heavily on my family for support and graduated in 2013. My goal was to gain as much clinical experience as quickly as possible.

For over three years, I travelled 115 km each way to work. Later, I moved to a rural hospital closer to my community, but the shift-work still affected my work-life balance. I missed many family events and community celebrations.

After 10 years in nursing, I accepted a position at Potlotek Health Centre. This reduced my stress and, most importantly, gave me more time for my family and community. I’m grateful for the knowledge I gained in hospital settings, as it provided valuable insight into what our Mi’kmaq people experience in the healthcare system.

My ultimate goal has always been to gather experience and knowledge to bring back and serve our community.
